Port Shape Is an Engineering Decision, Not a Preference

Few topics start more arguments in an LS forum than cathedral port versus rectangular port cylinder heads. Both designs move air into the cylinder, but the shape of that port fundamentally changes how the air behaves on its way there. Understanding the physics behind each design takes the guesswork out of choosing the right head for your combination.

Cathedral Port Heads: Velocity Over Volume

The cathedral port, named for its arched top profile, keeps the cross-sectional area of the intake runner relatively small and tall. That smaller area forces incoming air to move faster for a given volume, increasing air velocity at lower engine speeds.

Where Velocity Wins

Higher port velocity means better cylinder fill at low and mid-range RPM, which is exactly what a street truck, tow rig, or daily-driven LS swap needs. Quick throttle response off idle and strong torque in the 2,500 to 5,000 RPM range come directly from the cathedral port’s smaller, faster-moving airstream.

The LS3-style rectangular port trades that smaller, faster runner for a larger, straighter path. At lower RPM this larger area actually slows air velocity slightly, but as engine speed climbs, the rectangular port’s reduced restriction becomes the dominant factor.

Where Volume Wins

Above roughly 5,500 to 6,000 RPM, an engine simply needs more raw air volume than a cathedral port can efficiently deliver. The rectangular port’s larger cross-section keeps flow numbers climbing where a cathedral port head starts to plateau, which is why nearly every serious high-RPM LS combination runs a rectangular port head.
